O’NEIL, Hugh James
January 31, 1943 - December 25, 2014

Uxbridge Chapel

On December 25th I lost the love of my life to cancer.  Hugh had fought, over the last 2+ years, a very rare form of melanoma that affected his eye which recently metastasized to liver cancer.  It is a devastating illness that Hugh battled, attempting to carry on life as usual which is why many did not know he was ill.  Hugh was a wonderful father to Shaun, Philip (Dig), Patrick and pops to Wylie O’Neil.  Hugh is survived by his mother Ethel and his siblings, Dennis, Bonnie and Susan who are all devastated by the loss of their big brother.   He will be missed by Sherry’s entire family who embraced Hugh as one of their own, especially Laura who had a special friendship with Hugh. Hugh and I wanted to thank any number of people who provided support including Dr. Markowitz at the CNIB, who made the last 2 ½ years bearable, the entire team at Princess Margaret Hospital and most recently the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital staff who gave Hugh as much peace as possible in his last days.  Most importantly was Hugh’s good friend Laird Fraser.  Laird was by Hugh’s side for the entire duration of this illness.  He kept Hugh’s confidence, offered his friendship and generous support, we both thank you. Hugh has gone to meet our dogs Ace and Gertie, who passed away earlier this year, to walk the trails until I join him.  He was a good man and I love him dearly. A private wake will be held for family and close friends.  In lieu of flowers we would appreciate any donations be given in memory of Hugh to the CNIB or Alzheimer’s of Ontario, which afflicts Hugh’s mother.  Sherry O’Neil and family. Send Condolence

Uxbridge Chapel

With the very heaviest of hearts, we announce that on Friday night, Cameron Hicks was fatally struck by a motor vehicle. He was attending his first year of university in Ottawa where this tragic accident occurred. His mother, Linda, his father, Gord, and his brothers, Andrew and Mitchell are going to miss him forever. His grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and the entire town of Uxbridge have experienced a great loss. Kind, caring and fun-loving “Cammer” had a special connection with people of every age group and embraced everything life had to offer. He will be missed by all. We are establishing a memorial fund in Cameron’s name and will be raising money that will be used to support kids who are going through personal challenges. As a young teenager, Cam suffered from anxiety and coped with it for years. By acknowledging his condition and getting the proper care, Cam learned to deal with it and he emerged as a stronger, happier young adult who was ready to take on any challenge that the world had for him. In lieu of flowers, the Hicks family would be grateful for any donations to help start this memorial fund.  Cheques for Cam’s Memorial fund should be made payable to “Gord and Linda Hicks in Trust” and forwarded to Brookfield Johnson Controls, 7400 Birchmount Road, P.O. Box 4800, Markham, ON  L3R 4E6, attention Susan Featherstone or Gord Hicks.  Anonymous donations can be direct-deposited to “CIBC Account # 5542-8117780”.  Monies raised will be held in this account until the charity “Cam’s Kids Memorial Fund” is established. VANDERBURGH, Geraldine (“Geri”)

Uxbridge Chapel

With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Geri Vanderburgh, on Tuesday, April 15, 2014.  In her 89th year, Geri insisted upon living independently, on her own terms, at her rural property near Queensville, ON.  Surrounded by nature, she relished her environment, even as a harsh winter took its toll.  Born January 23, 1926 in Arcadia, NE, the eldest child of Wilma Harenberg and Joseph Hugh White, she lived through the depression, the early death of her father and 16 moves within her first 17 years-fodder for endless stories that many of us were fortunate to hear.  In 1943, she married William Richard Thorne, moved to Oak Ridge, TN where Bill worked at The Manhattan Project and daughter Sandra was born.  After the war, the family moved to Tulsa, OK where they welcomed son, William Jeffrey.  Though the marriage ended, they raised two children with easy cooperation and intent.  Geri married James Edward Vanderburgh, a Canadian studying at the University of Tulsa, in 1959.  She emigrated to Canada with her children and put down roots in Toronto.  Victoria Jean was born in 1964 and was raised in the family home (this was the longest time spent in one place in Geri’s lifetime).  She outlived five siblings and two husbands.  She leaves behind three children, three grandchildren, William Isaac, Amy Suzanne, and Sarah Joann; five great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.  Geri touched many lives through her friendships and work as a Departmental Assistant at the Ontario College of Art.  She often told people she that she was going to write a book about her life.  This sadly remained her dream, not her reality.  Independent, caring, resourceful, elegant and stubborn, she seldom had a bad word about anyone.  She had a strong relationship with God.  She loved all creatures four-legged or feathered.  She taught us to make the best of what you have, help those in need, laugh lots, look on the bright side (or at least invent a bright side), that “crazy” is ok, and it is always possible to triumph  over hard times.  Funeral and burial was in Uxbridge on April 17, 2014.  A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, June 28 in the Toronto area (location TBA).  Special thanks to the wonderful staff during her brief stay at Southlake. To make a donation in her memory, the family suggests the Farley Foundation (www.farleyfoundation.org) or the Owl Foundation (www.theowlfoundation.ca).

(905-852-3073), for visitation on Saturday, March 29, 2014 from 12p.m. until service time in the chapel at 1p.m.  In memory of Eric, please consider a donation to the building of the new Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Shelter.

We are sad to announce that Mary passed after a very brief illness at the Cottage Hospital, Uxbridge on Saturday February 22nd, 2014. Mary was predeceased by her parents Frances and Norman and is survived by her brother Ian and her nieces Elizabeth and Stephanie. She was much loved by the entire Edwards, Griffin, and her adopted Ruppel families. Mary inherited the mantle of keeper of the family archives over the years and was renowned for bringing all her different circles of friends and family together at Brookdale each year. Her continuing groups of friends included those from Lawrence Park Collegiate, Camp Oconto, and all the various family branches. Foremost was her love of Brookdale and her unrelenting efforts to constantly improve the property for the future. Her circle of friends and neighbours and co-workers is broad and will all feel the loss. At Mary’s request there will be no service and the family expects to have a spring gathering at Brookdale when her flowers are in bloom and her efforts can be appreciated by all. This will be followed by interment at Pine Grove Church beside her parents and close to her beloved Karen Ruppel. In lieu of flowers we would request donations to the Cottage Hospital Foundation, Uxbridge. For close to 30 years, Bill served the people of Toronto as a member of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Service. He served the broader community as a Freemason. He was twice Master of Richardson Lodge No. 136 in Stouffville and was recently appointed a Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario. Bill loved people, plain and simple. He was the neighbour you went to when you needed a drill bit, a cold beer or a shoulder on which to cry. An avid sports fan, he played and coached baseball and hockey. He cheered for the home team, including the Argos, the Jays and even those bums in blue and white —the Maple Leafs. He loved Christmas and liked his steak rare, his cigars Cuban and his Scotch single malt. He loved his bagpipes, though his neighbours …. not so much. He disliked basketball, the squirrels that stole the seed from his bird feeder and pretty much every other driver on the road. And peanut butter. Oh, how he despised peanut butter. Above all, Bill loved his family. You could literally see the joy on his face at our weekly dinners and other functions. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he embodied love. He is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy, children Patti and Jeff and Michelle and Kevin, and his grandchildren, Evan, Madeleine and Alicia. Fondly remembered by Shelby and Jack, he was predeceased by his constant companion, Scampy. You can celebrate Bill's life Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Low & Low Funeral Home, Uxbridge, 23 Main St. S. (905) 852-3073. Visitation will take place at 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jennifer Ashleigh Children's Charity or the action clinic at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre. You can also seek out the next blood donor clinic in your community and make a donation in Bill's memory. Bill gave 87 units to the blood bank during his life and, in the past year, "made a few withdrawals." There are many other people just like him who need your blood.
